Iksan city was formed in 1995, when the city of Iri was merged with the Iksan county. Iksan is locally famous for its produce of rice, jewelry industry and the largest Buddhist temple in the whole of South Korea. Although not known to many tourists, but if you are on a road trip or a guided tour then it is definitely worth a visit. Who wouldn’t want to see the jewelry dating all the way back to Baekje Kingdom?
Mireuksaji pagoda
The largest Buddhist temple of the ancient Baekje Kingdom (18 BC-660 AD) is believed to show some of the most advanced cultural and architectural buildings of Goguryeo , Baekje and Silla Kingdoms (three main kingdoms at that time). The stunning pagoda stands 14.5m tall, 12.5m wide and weights over 1,830 tons.
Iksan Jewelry Museum
A perfect place to discover the beauty of the traditional Korean jewelry from the Baekje Kingdom. This world class museum casts over 110,000 items and some of the rarest gemstones together with the life-size dinosaur skeletons. It is a great place to learn more about Korean past and get a glimpse of the geological finds in the country.
A traditional Korean dish that no one should skip while visiting South Korea - a soybean sprout soup (콩나물국밥). Don’t be deceived by the simplicity of it, it is a delicious soup which will leave you begging for more. The broth of the soup is made of anchovies, soybean sprouts and kelp, while the addition of kimchi and rice will create a crispy taste like never before. You can ask for a more or a less spicy soup, but either way, it is a tasty option!
