May 18 Memorial Park and Cemetery
The infamous May 18 uprising happened none else but here in Gwangju. The locals raised up against the military occupation and protested for Korea’s democracy. Over 150 people were killed with even more injured. Thus, the memorial and cemetery is a must-visit place to understand the Korean history better, and feel the airy atmosphere of 1980s.
1913 Songjeong Station
Opened in 1913, Songjeong Station Market was once a bustling hub for household goods and produce. Despite a decline in popularity due to the rise of large malls, the market has experienced a revival thanks to a modern redesign centered around the theme of time. With its vibrant architecture and updated signboards, it has become a favorite spot once again, renowned for its delicious hotteok and fish cakes.
Jeungsimsa Temple
Nestled on the western slopes of Mudeungsan Mountain, the temple was originally founded by Master Cheolgam in 860. Though it was devastated during the Japanese invasion of 1597 and again in the Korean War of the 1950s, the Joseon Dynasty-era Obaekjeon Hall remarkably survived. Today, visitors can still admire its original structures and reflect on the temple’s resilient history through Korea’s turbulent times.
Gwangju Lake Eco Park
Since its opening in 2006, Lake Eco Park has become a beloved retreat for both locals and travelers, offering a serene setting to enjoy the tranquil waters of Gwangju Lake. Mt. Mudeung Jusangjeollidae
Formed by volcanic activity during the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Age, this stunning cliff emerged from the eruption, cooling, and contraction of lava. The dramatic geological feature includes two prominent summits and the towering stone pillar of Gyubongam Temple, which stands as the largest of its kind in South Korea.
